Phoenix Guard

Phoenix Guard is a fictional anti-terrorist special forces team from the "" comic book series. Introduced in issue #13, the team was put together by White House Chief of Staff Garret Freedlowe (Cobra Commander in disguise), as a replacement for G.I. Joe.

The team is led by General Philip A. Rey, a former commander of G.I. Joe. The other members are Friday, High-Tide, Halo, Mech and Snake-Eater. While the team was presented to General Rey as being specialists in their respective fields, each member is actually a former Cobra operative. Hints appear in issues 14 and 15, with their true identities revealed in #17.

History

In issue #13 of "", General Rey is given command of the new team. In #14, the Guard attacks and destroys a Cobra outpost in Utah. Later, they are ordered to assault the hidden headquarters of the G.I. Joe team, the Rock, which begins in #15. Thirty-seven people die as a result of the attack.

In issue #17, after securing the base, Rey orders the Data Desk computer restored; once the database is available, Rey inputs his own team's personnel files into it. Automatically, the computer cross-checked the new files against a list of known threats and returns with a Cobra match for each member: Zarana, Copperhead, Wild Weasel, Scrap Iron, and Firefly for Friday, High-Tide, Halo, Mech, and Snake Eater, respectively.

Reinforcements for the Joes arrive in #18; Zarana, Scrap Iron and Copperhead are arrested, Wild Weasel is apparently killed by a grenade, and Firefly escapes.

It is later revealed that Wild Weasel survived and was incarcerated; Firefly was captured in Japan by Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. All five escape from the maximum security prison "The Coffin" during a raid led by Cobra operative Tomax in #30.
