Horace Abbott (1806-1887), was a noted American iron manufacturer and banker. His work included the armor plating for the "
USS Monitor " and all ships of that class.He was born in
Sudbury, Massachusetts , in 1806. He became the owner of Canton Iron Works inBaltimore, Maryland , which specialized in the production of steamboat and railroad components.He also was the founder of Baltimore 1st National Bank, and a director of the 2nd National Bank of Baltimore and the
Union Railroad of Baltimore , acquired by theNorthern Central Railroad in 1882, eventually becoming part of thePennsylvania Railroad .References
