*AFL Rising Star nominee 1997Bowen Lockwood (born 1 July 1978) is a former
Australian rules football er in theAustralian Football League .Originally from
Mt. Eliza , Lockwood attendedGeelong College and was recruited fromGeelong U18 in the1996 AFL Draft at pick number 7.Touted as a possible key forward for Port Adelaide, Lockwood earned a Rising Star nomination in 1997, his debut year.
After a training incident in 1999 where Lockwood picked up a ball and was crashed into by a teammate, he had continual problems with a
bulging disc injury. He played only 6 games for the '99 season and ten in 2000.He continued to struggle, playing 4 games in 2001, a year which he was considered trade bait at the end of. In 2002 he remained on Port's list but announced his retirement that season at only 24 years of age due to chronic injury.
Following his retirement, the injury persisted and as of 2006 Lockwood lives in
Paradise, South Australia withpainkillers andlumbar support getting him through the day. His case is one of the reasons for the set up of the X-Men, a group of formerVFL/AFL players set up to help increase retirement payouts to Australian rules footballers who have suffered life-affecting injuries.External links
