Thwing (pronEng|twiŋ) is a small village in the Yorkshire Wolds, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately convert|8|mi|km|lk=on from the east coast, just north of the B1253 road. The nearest neighbouring towns are Driffield convert|8|mi|km|lk=off to the south, Bridlington convert|8|mi|km|lk=off to the east, Filey convert|8|mi|km|lk=off to the north east and Scarborough convert|11|mi|km|lk=off to the north. It forms part of the civil parish of Thwing and Octon.

Description

The village has a twelfth century Norman Church (All Saints), and a pub previously known as "The Rampant Horse"cite web|url=http://www.driffield.co.uk/wolds_village_thwing.htm|title=The Villages of the Yorkshire Wolds - Thwing|work=Driffield Online|year=1999|accessdate=2006-08-20] , is now under new management operating as "The Falling Stone". The village used to have a post office but it was closed due to government cuts in 2002.

Famous people

*Saint John of Bridlington was born in Thwing in 1320 and died in 1379. History and archaeology

Bronze age

In 2003 a beautiful Bronze Age penannular ring was found by a metal detector user in Thwing. The ring has the appearance of striped yellow and pale gold, but is actually gold applied over a base metal core. It is thought to date from between 1150 BC and 750 BC. Market and fair

Local meteorite

On Sunday 13th December 1795 at about 3 p.m. a stone weighing 56 pounds (about 25 kg) fell close to Wold Cottage, about 1½ miles NNW of Thwing, in Wold Newton. The resulting crater was about a metre in diameter and half a metre in depth. No-one was injured, though three people were within 150 metres of the impact.
