The scalloped ribbonfish is oceanic and mesopelagic, adults feeding on small fishes and squids. They are oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae. They swim with a head-up stance. Coloration of the young is silvery with around 6 vertical bars on the dorsal part of body and 4 on the ventral part, tail with around 6 complete black bars, and the caudal fin blackish with the base of the fin pale. Adults are silver-grey but paler ventrally, the dorsal fin is scarlet, and the caudal fin is reddish-black, darker distally.
