Known as "Kid Ultimate", Vaden was an excellent amateur and highly skilled boxer. He captured scores of accolades and several national titles. In 1990 he became the
United States Amateur Lightweight Champion . His final amateur record was 327 wins and 10 losses. The highest winning percentage in amateur boxing history. But after they installed the computer scoring system which wasn't to Vaden's benefit he very discreetly decided to turn pro after getting the bronze medal in the 1990 Goodwill Games. He spurned all boxing promoters and created his own syndicate of businessmen and started Ultimate Sports Associates.Pro career
Vaden turned pro in 1991 and began his career with 24 consecutive wins. On March 25,1994 he captured the I.B.F. Inter-Continental Junior Middleweight title in an impressive 12 round unanimous decision. To make it even more impressive was that Vaden went from an 8 round fighter straight to the maximum 12 round limit. August 12,1995 at The MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. As a 3-1 underdog Vaden secured his place in boxing history by wresting the World Junior Middleweight title from the very dangerous Vincent Pettway. In addition to accomplishing this feat Vaden became the FIRST & ONLY true San Diego native to ever win a pro boxing world title. November 20,1999 Taj Mahal Atlantic City,NJ. Vaden won the vacant U.S.B.A Junior Middleweight Title knocking out Stephan Johnson in the 10th round. Sadly,Mr. Johnson never would regain consciousness and would die 15 days later. This would create Vaden's boxing exit. He would retire shortly afterwards.
