coeducational Comprehensive school located in Richmond inNorth Yorkshire ,England . It serves a wide Catchment area across most of the north-west corner of North Yorkshire, includingSwaledale .The school was created in 1971 by the merger of the former Richmond School (from which it took its name)- a Grammar School for boys who had passed their 11 plus exam and which could trace its origins back many centuries, Richmond High School - a High School for girls who had also passed their 11 plus exam and the
secondary modern school for those boys and girls who hadn't passed the exam."Middle School" (years 8 to 11), based in the former Secondary Modern school building which dates from the 1960s, is located at the school's main campus on
Darlington Road. Also part of the main campus is "Upper School" which is home to years 12 to 13 and acts as the base for the school'sSixth Form . "Upper School" is the former girls High School and was designed by the architectDenis Clarke Hall . Built in the late 1930s it is nationally significant as an early example of themodernist influence which became widespread in post-war school designs. Around the main campus are the schools sports fields and various buildings that have been constructed since the schools were merged.Located away from the main campus near the centre of Richmond is "Lower School". Home to year 7, it is located in the former boys Grammar School the buildings of which date from the 19th century - the original school was located in what is now the graveyard of the nearby church. The school recently announced plans to gradually concentrate all facilities on the main campus and sell "Lower School" in the coming years.
Both the School and its Sixth Form have received favourable reports from Ofsted in recent years although the Sixth Form's ability to provide differianted teaching was questioned. The School has a value added score of 1003.6 for exam results from KS2 through GCSE which compares with a national average of 990.3 [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/education/04/school_tables/secondary_schools/html/815_4076.stm BBC NEWS | Education | League Tables | Richmond School ] ] . The Sixth Form in contrast scores a below national average AS/A2 level performance of 267.5 compared to the national average of 269.2.
Redevelopment
Richmond school is situated on two sites a total of 1 mile away from each other and takes about 5 minutes by school bus to get from one to the other. It is the only one like this currently in North Yorkshire. Consequently, North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has granted the school £31 million to be spent redeveloping the entire school. This does cause problems, however, as part of the school is listed and cannot be torn down. Building plans have recently been proposed by the contracted architect and are currently under the scrutiny of NYCC and the school's senior management team.
