The school colors are blue and white. In the early 1980s, some in Richmond tried to change the mascot because they were offended to be associated with the devil. The debate went on in the local newspaper editorials and in store fronts. It even made the local Detroit television news. The mascot remains the Blue Devil to this day.Budget Crisis
In the late 1990s and throughout the 2000s, the Richmond School District has suffered under major budget crunches, including several years without transportation in the early 1990s. They have tried to pass a new bond several times to increase funding, but have failed numerous times. Most of the failures cited by opponents to the bond have been misuse of funding. This includes purchasing a big screen television in the cafeteria as opposed to new books or for employment. Also, they have cut almost all online classes as a result of the budget crisis. Normally, a school would force them to replace the classes, but instead Richmond allows them to replace the classes with nothing [http://www.city-data.com/school/richmond-community-high-school-mi.html] .Many wonder how the district still affords to pay for the classes, but Richmond has been able to maintain its spending procedures, primarily through school lunches. An average lunch starts at $2.50 for full-pay students, $.50 for reduced pay and $3.25 for staff. So the school has some problems, but nothing a little TLC can't handle, right?
Athletics
Wrestling, historically, has been the most successful athletic program in the school. They won the Michigan Division III state championship in 2000, 2002, and 2006. They were also runners-up in 1996, 2004, 2007. There have been two individual state wrestling champions. The soccer team has also had recent success. In 2006 the boy's soccer team won the Michigan Division III state championship. Ss far, they have been unable to repeat the feat. The boys football team's most successful season was in 2003. During the 2003 season, they were 12-0 and won the regional championship, however, they lost and were unable to make it to the state finals. The Richmond High School has no other sports teams worthy of any recognition [http://www.alumniclass.com/richmondhsmi] .
