The Italian Job was Kings Dominion's new attraction in 2006."Backlot Stunt Coaster" opened as The Italian Job: Turbo Coaster in 2006, during Kings Dominion's last season under
Paramount Parks /CBS ownership. It was themed to "The Italian Job " and, as such, was the last Paramount-themed ride to open in the park. AfterCedar Fair acquired Kings Dominion and the other four Paramount Parks during the 2006 season, Cedar Fair changed the park's name back to Kings Dominion for the 2007 season. It remained under its original name for the 2007 season. During the 2007-2008 offseason, Cedar Fair changed "The Italian Job: Turbo Coaster's" name to Back Lot Stunt Coaster and changed the name of "Tomb Raider: Firefall" to "The Crypt". "Backlot Stunt Coaster" took the place of Diamond Falls (a flume ride) and two of the first water park attractions in the park: FreeFallin', an assortment of water slides, and the children's area of the water park.
The layout
The coaster cars are designed to look like 3:4 scale
MINI Cooper convertibles, with each car holding 4 passengers at a time. The ride is meant to emulate the movie's car chase sequence, stopping midway to be interrupted by a sequence of a helicopter flying by and shooting at the cars, followed by pyrotechnics. The ride is fairly short, at about 1 minute, 4 seconds. The ride features three launch sections. At the beginning, riders are launched into a double helix at 40 mph; the acceleration from 0 to 40 takes 3 seconds. The other launch sections occur when riders are launched into a tunnel and at the end of the same tunnel section, prior to a water splash that passes under the ride's entrance.
