Yangtze River Crossing

Yangtze River Crossing

The Yangtze River Crossing may refer to one of three overhead power lines crossing the Yangtze River, China.

Jiangyin

One exists at Jiangyin. It is a section of the 500kV-powerline from the Yan Cheng power station to the Dou Shan substation in the province of Jiangsu. The powerline section running over the river has a span width of convert|2303|m|ft|0|abbr=on. It is carried by two convert|346.5|m|ft|0|abbr=on tall suspension electricity pylons, each weighing 4,192 tons, both are tallest electricity pylon in the world. They are both identical lattice towers of square cross section with an area of convert|68|m|ft|0|abbr=on × 68 m at the base and convert|8|m|ft|0|abbr=on × 8 m at the top. The pylons are of the Danube type carrying 4 conductors on the lower crossbar, convert|312|m|ft|0|abbr=on above ground with a length of convert|77|m|ft|0|abbr=on and two conductors on the upper crossbar. The insulator chains are convert|10|m|ft|0|abbr=on long. These pylons, which are both equipped with an elevator, which runs in a cylindrical tube in its center, are much taller than any other electricity pylons built so far and surpass even the Eiffel Tower. On each side of the river are these pylons followed by two anchor towers, for each circuit. They are convert|55|m|ft|0|abbr=on tall, weigh 110 tons and stand on an area of convert|16|m|ft|0|abbr=on × convert|24|m|ft|0|abbr=on.

Construction of pylons started on November 8th, 2002. They were completed on April 13th, 2004. On November 18th, 2004 the powerline went into service.
