Belgrade, Maine , originally a storekeeper and millkeeper, he was the Governor ofMaine from 1855 to 1856, represented Maine's fourth district in theUnited States House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863 and served in theMaine state legislature . He was older brother toLot M. Morrill , aU.S. Treasury Secretary under PresidentUlysses S. Grant . He died in 1887 inAugusta, Maine and is buried at the Forest Grove Cemetery,Augusta, Maine .After his term as Governor, Morrill served as president of the
