XHILA-TV is a full-service, Spanish-language, independent television station in Mexicali, Baja California. It broadcasts in analog on UHF channel 66, serving the Mexicali Valley and the southern Imperial Valley, including El Centro, California, and the Colorado River cities of San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora and Yuma, Arizona. The station is also carried on the cable television systems of each of the four prinicipal communities it serves. Its programming is repeated in Yuma on K28FM channel 28, a local, low-powered repeater owned by Broadcast Group, Ltd.

Begun in 1997, the station is owned by Intermedia de Mexicali and is licensed to its President, Arnoldo Cabada de la O. History

XHILA-TV began with experimental broadcasts in 1997, then began broadcasting commercially in October 1998. [cite web |url=http://www.canal66.com.mx/pages/corporativo.php |title=Corporativo |publisher=Canal66.com.mx |accessdate=2007-09-21] It has been owned since inception by Intermedia de Mexicali, airing independent programming during the day, and news from CNI at night. The station no longer airs CNI programming.

In 2008, XHILA became affiliated with Mexico's newest broadcast network, cadenatres. This, in effect, gives cadenatres its first American affiliate, K28FM.

History of K28FM

Previously, K28FM has been a stand-alone station, affiliated with Mas Musica, then a repeater for XHILA-TV, then later, an affiliate of La Familia Network (LFN), a Spanish-language family-oriented broadcast television network. From late September 2006, the station was an affiliate of MTV Tr3s, a Latino-focused music channel. In February 2007, K28FM was an affiliate of Retro Television Network; the station would later switch to Retro Jams (a music video network), before returning to XHILA.

In September 2006, K28FM was identified as a "singleton applicant" for a companion digital LPTV signal on UHF channel 17 [http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,46344.0.html] . A singleton applicant is one whose application for a construction permit has no competition from nearby applications on the same or adjacent channels. As a singleton applicant, the station is likely to be granted a construction permit.

Programming

XHILA-TV targets both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. XHILA-TV provides local information, news shows and variety programs for viewers along with a schedule of movies, comedies and programs of interest.
