a.P.A.t.T. (pronounced "ape hat" is a musical collective from Liverpool in the UK. With a varying lineup, the group has been active since 1998. They have released two full-length albums, and two EPs during this time, with little regard for genre or convention.

History

a.P.A.t.T. officially began with the completion of a full C90 minute cassette tape back in 1998. It was decided from the off-set that the way the music was formed on this tape (disjointed, non-specific, omni-style) was to influence the revolving multi-instrumentalist approach and dictate the 'anti-hierarchical' line-up of the act.

It was not until 2002 and the introduction of digital recording techniques that a.P.A.t.T. were to make an 'official' release.

Following several line-up changes, software changes, hardware changes, various support slots and a Dutch tour, a.P.A.t.T. teamed up with London label, Lowsley Sounds, to release their first full album, (L.P.) (2004). Although hopes were high for this release and it sold well, a.P.A.t.T. were never satisfied with the final outcome.

(e.P.) was a strong template of how a.P.A.t.T. would come to construct their later releases but was delivered with Lo-Fi charm and ideas above their station. Its high points include the avant-hip hop of "My Nun's Door Theme" and the sinister song craft of "Nice II".

Recordings began immediately to try to complete the perfect album. These sessions lead to a series of recordings featuring lots of new composition techniques and relentless digital audio manipulation. These recordings started to circulate heavily around sampling and the use of copyrighted work as the main body of the song. a.P.A.t.T. understood that this could not be compiled as evidence towards a new, original album but would be a separate set of recordings.

Fre(e.P.) - (2005)

Running time: 44 minutes

Status: Available online (download only)

Fre(e.P.) (2005) was a semi-conceptual release available (and still available) via download, for free, as a zip file. The file contains the whole release including the art work. The entire piece is made and inspired from other people's work, from bass lines to lyrics to melody; everything is borrowed material. a.P.A.t.T. constructed this release in a DJ mash-up style, whilst still retaining their alternative compositional methods. It has been downloaded over a squillion times.

2005 to present day

Six months were then spent constructing their largest installation piece to date, Quartet. This comprised of four original films with four individual soundtracks of varying lengths, a live performance and an interactive environment controlling a chance compositional software programme. This has to be seen to be believed and understood (sic.).

Black and White Mass 2008

The Release of "Black and White Mass" on Pickled Egg records has already been critically acclaimed.

Plan B Magazine said.... "There is no frequency left unturned,no genre left unwrapped or ignored. A confident, twisted skip through all that is good and fun, like an end-of-century review that leaves out all the crap bits. And so wondrously crafted! Each tinkling, each scrape of a cymbal, each deathly metal blast is crystallised and seemingly separated to ease the aural digestion. a.P.a.t.T. is deft and skilful; alented and precocious. a.P.a.t.T. is Fun. Fun. Fun!"

Radio 1 's Huw Stevens awarded it "Album of the Week". [http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/huwstephens/tracklistingarchive.shtml?080207]
