- George Tibbits
George Tibbits was an American politician and a member of the
United States House of Representatives fromNew York . He was born in Warwick,Rhode Island onJanuary 14 ,1763 . He pursued classical studies and engaged in business inLansingburgh, New York in 1784. He moved toTroy, New York in 1797 and became engaged in extensive mercantile pursuits. He was a member of theNew York State Assembly in 1800.George Tibbits was elected as a Federalist to the
Eighth Congress , which met fromMarch 4 ,1803 toMarch 3 ,1805 . He was not a candidate for renomination in 1804. He served as a member of theNew York State Senate from 1815 to 1818, and he was an unsuccessful Federalist candidate forLieutenant Governor of New York in 1816.He was a member of the commission on state prisons, which rendered a favorable report on the
Auburn Prison system in 1824. He was a member of the commission which had charge of the construction ofSing Sing Prison . He was the mayor of Troy, New York from 1830 to 1836. He died in Troy, New York inRensselaer County onJuly 19 ,1849 . He was interred in Oakwood Cemetery.External links
