The district was originally created by the
Florida Legislature in1943 as the 2nd District. Democrat Charles Bennett represented the district from1948 -1992 . The district was renumbered as the 3rd District in1967 and later as the 4th District in1993 . During the1992 Congressional Election, Bennett chose to retire rather than fight an intense re-election campaign against challengerTillie K. Fowler . Fowler won the election and became the first Republican to represent the district. She held the position from1993 -2000 .George W. Bush received 69% of the vote in this district in 2004.Resources
