Marissa is not sure that she wants to go, as she is increasingly concerned for her Jimmy's condition since his criminal financial dealings, and Julie‘s subsequent request for a divorce. She thinks she should stay in town to support her father, especially since her mother has left town. Jimmy insists that Marissa goes on her trip, as he has plans of his own. Kirsten is helping him move out of the Cooper home and into his own apartment. He is doing so, reluctantly, to avoid any more turmoil for Julie and the girls. Julie has made it clear that she wants a divorce, and Jimmy is trying to respect that.
An old friend and colleague of Sandy's, Rachel, has a job opportunity that has opened up at her firm, and is adamant that he takes it. He resists at first, as he has always been the type to work for the underdog and not in a corporate law firm. But Rachel and an upset Kirsten know that Sandy will change his mind. Sandy has been thinking a lot lately about how he is just sort of floating along on Kirsten's money and status. He wants to make something for himself for a change and bring more balance to the financial aspect of his and Kirsten's relationship.
At yet another one of her parties, Holly makes some more advances toward Luke. Though he resists this time, she tells him that his renewed faith in his relationship with Marissa won't last long, and he'll come back to her.
After Summer's ride to T.J. falls through, Seth offers her a ride. She reluctantly accepts and, after her father insists, convinces Marissa to go with them, little does Marissa know that Ryan is also coming along for the weekend.
On the way to T.J., Marissa and Ryan sit awkwardly in the backseat as Seth drives, and Summer bitches and whines about Seth's car and driving skills. It is said whining that causes a fight between Seth and Summer, which in turn causes Seth to drive off the road into a ditch. The car will take at least a day to repair, so the foursome check into a scuzzy motel for the night.
Back in Newport, Jimmy and Kirsten are setting up Jimmy's new apartment while Sandy is continually wooed by Rachel and her 'Evil Empire' firm. After some candid conversation, Jimmy kisses Kirsten. She is made very uncomfortable and leaves.
Back at the dirty motel on the side of the road, Seth and Summer find themselves sharing a bed, while Marissa gets the bad news from her father. Ryan consoles her as they sleep on the couch. The next night they all finally arrive in T.J., but the fun ends before it begins after Marissa catches Luke and Holly in a very close dance together and making out. Devastated about her parents impending divorce and her boyfriend's unfaithfulness, Marissa loses herself into a dark alley, intoxicated with alcohol and a prescription drug overdose.
