The Cypriot

"The Cypriot" is a novel by Andreas Koumi published in July 2006 by Dexter Haven, an imprint of Black Spring Press.

Plot summary

A story of love across a divide of religion and identity, of passionate loyalties and heart-rending choices. The 1950s: Cyprus is under British rule. The struggle for freedom begins. To the Orthodox Christian majority, freedom means enosisunion with Greece. To the Muslim minority, enosis means disaster. Andonis, a Christian, struggles for his own freedom: to be a tailor and escape a life in his father’s fields; to be a Cypriot and be with his forbidden Muslim love. At stake are family and friendships, beliefs and traditions, village and homeland."

About The Author

This critically acclaimed novel of love, loyalty and stark choices, began its life as a project on Abctales, a UK based writers website established to encourage new writing talent.

The novel, a tragic romance between a Christian and a Muslim offering a vision for a re-unified island of love was inspired, in no small measure, by the author's experiences in establishing and developing the award-winning Haringey-based youth media charity Exposure Organisation Limited.
