July 7 ,1895 -September 28 ,1978 ) was aPrince Edward Island politician and jurist, who served asPremier of Prince Edward Island from 1936 to 1943. His son Alexander B. Campbell later served as Premier of Prince Edward Island from 1966 to 1978.A
Rhodes Scholar , Alexander first won a seat in the provinciallegislature in 1931 and joined the Liberals on the opposition benches. The Liberals won the 1935 election and Campbell becameAttorney-General . WhenPremier Walter M. Lea died in 1936, Campbell succeeded him. Campbell's government organised the provincial police, passed the province's first law governing the public service and established anational park . With the beginning ofWorld War II , Campbell's government committed itself to organising the province for the war effort.In 1943, Campbell left politics to become
Chief Justice on the island's Supreme Court and, in 1970, became head of the Foreign Claims Commission.In his capacity as Chief Justice of Prince Edward Island, he had the pleasure of swearing in his son,
Alexander B. Campbell , aspremier in 1966.In 1973 he was made a Companion of the
Order of Canada .He served as President of the
