Tatiana Yevgenyevna Samoylova ( _ru. Татья́на Евге́ньевна Само́йлова; b.
4 May ,1934 ) is aRussia n film actress who starred in "The Cranes Are Flying " (1957) and "Anna Karenina " (1968).Evgeny Samoilov 's only daughter, she was born in Leningrad, but her father moved toMoscow to work withVsevolod Meyerhold later that year. Samoilova was propelled to stardom in1957 , when she played the lead role of Veronika in "The Cranes Are Flying ". The film was a tremendous success, winning thePalme d'Or atCannes and a special prize for Samoilova. She received many offers to continue her career in the West, but declined in the face of mounting pressure from the establishment of the day.In the 1960s, Samoilova's career in the Soviet cinema stagnated. Anna Karenina in a1968 Soviet version ofTolstoy 's novel. She appeared in the movie alongside her former husbandVasily Lanovoy (as Count Vronsky) andMaya Plisetskaya (as Karenina's friend Betsy). After Samoilova performed two film roles other actresses would have gone to extremes to obtain, the rest of her career was not as varied and interesting. Many years of obscurity and unemployment followed, and she never starred in another movie. It was not until1993 that she was named aPeople's Artist of Russia .External links
