- Ohio State Route 714
State Route 714 was a three mile, two lane, north-south highway in the
U.S. state ofOhio , located approximately five miles east of Urbana, in Champaign county. Its termini were US 36 to the south and SR 296 to the north. What is significant about SR 714 is that it was renumbered in 1982 to 814 because, beginning in the early 1970s, the SR 714 signs would "disappear". It was discovered that because 714 was also a slang term for Quaaludes, a prescription drug often used recreationally, young persons were stealing the highway signs.
Indeed, once the decision to change the route number had been made, the state decided that, rather than send someone to remove the old signs and replace them with new ones, it would save on manpower and tax dollars to let the remaining old signs be stolen and then install the new ones on an as needed basis.
