underland
He made his Sunderland debut aged 29 on Saturday,
19 October 1996 , as a sub in a 3-0 defeat at Southampton. He stayed with Sunderland for a further two years before signing for archrivalsNewcastle United in what was a surprise move at the time; in the summer of 1998 he conceded 11 goals in the play-off final against Charlton (including penalties) which led to his subsequent departure from the club. However 7 of these were in the penalty shoot out.Newcastle
At Newcastle he was merely a backup to Steve Harper and
Shay Given ; he never made a competitive start for the Magpies and after being loaned to various clubs throughout his 21 month spell onTyneside , he was granted a free transfer to Cambridge United.Cambridge & Stevenage
He was released by Cambridge at the end of the 2002 season and it appeared as if his footballing career was coming to a close, however he rediscovered some form and passion for the game and joined Stevenage Borough in February 2003. He was a regular for Stevenage until in March 2004, he broke his leg playing in a league match against Barnet. He was forced to retire at the end of the season and he immediately took up a coaching role at the club.
