The Brockenbahn is one of three
metre gauge railways which together the theHarzquerbahn andSelketalbahn comprise theHarzer Schmalspurbahnen narrow gaugerailway network in theHarz Mountains region ofGermany .It runs from the town of
Drei Annen Hohne , where it joins the Harzquerbahn, to the summit ofBrocken , the highest mountain in this part of the country at 1141 metres. During theCold War era, the mountain was off-limits to non-military personnel, but since the reunification of East andWest Germany and subsequent re-opening of the line, it has become extremely popular, and carries thousands of tourists to the summit every year.Further reading
