Castletown Shoppingworld is a shopping centre in Townsville,
Australia . The second-largest centre in the district, Castletown has four major tenants along with 105 specialty stores, and is owned by Mcconaghy Properties.Expansion
Castletown recently completed an expansion project that included a new Target department store (which replaced the old store and was opened as the largest Target store in Australia), an extra 40 specialty stores and a 450-seat food court. The expansion opened on
13 June 2007 .The last expansion that the shopping centre undertook was in 1997 with the addition of an expanded Woolworths Supermarket and an Action Supermarket. Basement parking was also included.
However McConaghy Properties have said the shopping complex is to be extended again on the southern side by adding a 6500sq m discount department store and 5026sq m of specialty shops, and the extension would also create a two-level centre with basement, ground level and rooftop parking holding around 749 car park spaces. In 2005 and 2006, McConaghy Properties had been buying the 20 homes and properties on the southern side of the shopping centre ready for development, and has now lodged a development application with the council.
McConaghy Properties is planning to reconfigure the properties and close Barryman St and parts of Kitchener St, Haig St and Einasleigh Crescent so it can develop a new road into the new southern boundary of the centre. [http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2008/08/12/15366_news.html]
