Franklin High School is a public high school located in Elk Grove, California, with a current student body of approximately 2,900 students.

History of Franklin

The town of Franklin has played an important role in the lives of families in the southern Sacramento County ever since its beginning in 1856. Franklin was founded by an enterprising gentleman named Andrew George, who established his town fourteen miles south of Sacramento on the busy Lower Stockton Road. Now known as Franklin Boulevard, this had been the main road from Sutter's Fort to the Mexican capital of Monterey, and during the Gold Rush it became the stage route to Stockton.

Mr. George did not name his town Franklin, as it is known today. He called it Georgetown, after himself, and the post office there was known by that name. However, the hotel he built was given the name of the Franklin House, in honor of his mother's family, the Franklins.

Since the district's creation in 1959, Franklin Elementary School has been the only school located in the town of Franklin. With the opening of Franklin High School in 2002 in the new East Franklin area, Franklin's rich educational history and heritage continues. Franklin High School has had a graduating class every year since the class of 2005.

Campus

Franklin High School shares its campus with Toby Johnson Middle School, and the Franklin community library. It is on a large plot of land next to the future Bartholomew Sports Park.

Bartholomew Sports Park

Bartholomew Sports Park is a future 46 acre master-planned park, located next to Franklin High School. Construction is set to start in the fall of 2007. It will include "four lighted soccer/football fields, three to four lighted softball/baseball fields, four tennis courts, shade structures, playground equipment, restrooms, parking lot for 480 vehicles and a concession building." [http://www.yourcsd.com/parks/facts/bartholomewsports.html] Currently the lot is empty except for an occupied house and small farm.

The environmental regulatory review is being conducted through summer 2007. The first step of construction, street improvements, begins summer 2007. The street improvements project is currently out to bid and estimates are due back on June 27, 2007. It is expected to be a sports field for the adjacent Franklin High School.

Media & Publications

As well as being known for its high API scores, Franklin High School is also well known for its Media & Publications."The Roar" Franklins official newspaper is published every year at the end of each term. It has become so popular that the website myhighschooljournalism.com has published each issue of the newspaper. "WMC" or Wildcat Media Communications is a student run newsbrodcast that airs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the campus from the TV studio. It informs students of upcoming school functions, club & academic news, and sporting events & practices. Occasionally it will run student made videos & news reports. Local news station KXTV has aired a segment called "What's Cool At Your School' in which WMC's bulletins have been shown on many occasions.

Sports

Currently at Franklin High School, water sports, such as water polo, swimming, and diving are played at the Wackford Aquatic Complex. Football is played at a mid-sized stadium at Cosumnes River College. Many other sports, such as track and field, soccer, baseball, and tennis, are played at locations on campus or shared between Toby Johnson Middle School. One of the biggest football games of the season is the Homecoming game where Franklin faces off against their rival school Elk Grove High School.

Administration

The API score can fall between 0 and 1000. The higher, the better. The target score for all California schools is 800. The statewide rank refers to how a school compares to others in the state. A statewide rank of 10 means that particular school is in the top 10% of all schools in the state, a score of 9 means that school is in the top 20% of all schools in the state, and so on.
