Fairchild Publications, Inc.

Fairchild Publications, Inc. is a publishing company headquartered in New York City that was formed in 1892 when a peddler by the name of Edmund Fairchild took over a failing newspaper that gave exclusive coverage to the Men’s Clothing business. It was eventually named the "Daily News Record", and included a small feature about Women’s Wear. In July, 1910, this feature was split from the paper, and given its own publication that is today "Women's Wear Daily". Other publications in the Fairchild stable include "Home Furnishings Daily; Golf Pro Merchandising; Footwear News; Supermarket News; Electronic news; Metalworking news; Jane; W;", a glossy publication edited by Clay Felker, who also founded New York magazine; and several business directories. Fairchild Publications was purchased by Capital Cities Communications in 1968. In 1991, Fairchild moved to 7 West 34th Street in Manhattan. In 1999, Fairchild Publications was sold by the Walt Disney Company to Advance Publications, the parent company of Conde Nast, making Advance the publisher of Women's Wear Daily, W, and Jane in addition to its prior holdings of Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Mademoiselle.
