2AAA (also known as FM107.1 2AAA) is an community radio station operated by Wagga Wagga Community Media Incorporated in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia broadcasting on FM 107.1 MHz.

The station was officially opened on 31 July, 1981 and celebrated 25 years of continuous broadcasting in 2006.

History

2AAA had its beginnings in June 1978 when a group people gathered to discuss the idea of establishing an community radio station in Wagga Wagga. Stuart Carter is given credit for the "brainchild". Stuart represented the Students' Union of the Riverina College of Advanced Education. Stuart presented the group with a working paper entitled "Community Radio IS People".

The first public meeting was held on 19 September 1978 in the Wagga Wagga City Council chambers and was attended by 75 people. A plan of action was presented to the second public meeting in November 1978 by the steering committee.

Test transmissions were conducted from the Wagga Wagga College of Technical And Further Education (TAFE) between 11 and 13 April 1980. Programs included classical, middle-of-the-road, rock, country, folk, opera, ballet, jazz as well as music from various international groups presented in their own language.

After a licence hearing in October 1980, 2AAA was granted a licence by the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal (now the Australian Communications and Media Authority).

The first official broadcast was on Friday 31 July 1981. It ran for 54 hours from Friday till Monday. At first, 2AAA transmitted from temporary premises in the Australian Arcade, Fitzmaurice Street.

2AAA relocated to its own premises in November 1982, on the corner of Young and Coleman Streets, Turvey Park on the foot of Willans Hill.
