The village Betliar lies in a valley of the river Slaná, 5 km northwest from
Rožňava . The first written mention is from the year1330 , when it is mentioned under the name Bethler. It belonged to theBebek family and laterAndrássy family. Inhabitants lived on mining, agriculture and work in a forest. Mining character of the village, historical interesting places and beauty of the Volovské vrchy (hills) signed that Betliar has changed in touristically sought-after destination. The most known place in the village is a mansion, built on an old small Bebek’s castle from the 15th century. It is situated in beautiful surrounding of english park, designed by famous architect H. Nebbiem. The mansion was rebuilt many times, last by the Andrassy family in the year1880 . Since that time it has preserved its look with small workings up to the present and it serves as an exposition of theSlovak National Museum . In the year1985 it was declared a national cultural monument. From among sacral sights there especially captures a classicistic evangelical church from the year1794 . Originally it was built without a tower which was built up in the year1834 . TheRoman-Catholic church ofSaint Elisabeth has even older history. It was built in the first half of the 14th century in a Gothic style. In the 17th and 19th century it was refashioned. History ofBetliar is connected also with many persons, such as writerJohan Fabricius . In the village there is an accommodation facility in hotels, pensions, lodging houses and privat ones.External links
