Adam first appeared in 1989 following the deaths of his parents, Ian and Bridget. Adam had originally planned to stop in the Bay En Route to the
Great Barrier Reef and begin charter journeys on his yacht. Unfortunately, this fell through after a gang of illegal smugglers stole the yacht.Adam wasn't one to let life knock him down; Instead he got into various scams and scrapes with local residents Martin Dibble and
Lance Smart . Within time, Adam settled into the bay and began working at the Surf Club.In 1993, While taking a boat out for a spin with friends Greg and Bobby Marshall, Adam hit a large piece of driftwood which caused the boat to shake and Bobby to go overboard. Bobby spent a week in a coma and eventually died. Greg, blaming Adam for his wife's death threw him out of The Beach House.
Adam was left feeling like an outcast. He moved into a shack near the backlot of the Carvan Park along with
Irene Roberts . One day while Adam and Irene were out, Sam, Bobby's adopted son crept into the shack and started a fire. Adam acted quickly to save Sam and was hailed as a hero.Adam left Summer Bay shortly after that.
In late 1999, Adam returned to Summer Bay as the new manager of The Bonza Burger Kiosk in the Surf Club and made an enemy out of Hayley Smith, Irene's foster daughter. Within several weeks, Adam left town again.
