Several thousand individual booksellers subscribe to their listing service. Booksellers will upload their book lists along with prices and descriptions of items they own. Searches on the site bring up results from any seller's books. On completed sales, member booksellers pay a percentage of the sale price to the firm. Certain sellers are also charged a monthly fee. The site can collect charge card payment via the web. Biblio.com is probably the 3rd largest books-only website. Many sellers who list stock on Biblio also have their material simultaneously on competitor's sites such as abebooks.com or alibris.com.
Biblio started as a
metasearch engine in 2000, where potential book buyers could initiate a web search in one place that would return results from a variety of major booksellers. In early 2003, the company shifted focus to concentrate on providing a consolidated search service ande-commerce tools for mostly independent bookstores and booksellers. Later that year it became involved with a community library building project in rural Bolivia, which eventually led to the establishment in 2005 ofBiblioworks.org , a non-profit organization that seeks to foster similar community library projects and promote literacy in "communities in need" through the donating of books, supplies and funding. In October 2007, Biblio announced that it had become the first online book marketplace to offer carbon free shipping through its ecosend program, purchasing
carbon offsets for the shipment of every book sold through its site.In June, 2008, Biblio announced that it had partnered with
Bibliopolis to become the exclusive distributor of the popularBookHound inventory software for bookstores. The company is headquartered in
Asheville, North Carolina , USA.External links
