John Metcalf (composer)

John Metcalf (composer)

John Metcalf (born 1946) is a leading Welsh composer. Educated at Dean Close School, Cheltenham he is a joint UK-Canadian citizen, his music has been widely performed throughout Europe, North America and elsewhere.

His work has embraced a variety of forms, including several large-scale operas, choral and orchestral works, and a great deal of chamber music, both instrumental and vocal. Stylistically it has a strong tonal influence, but is often rhythmically complex, with much use of polyrhythms.

Alongside his composing work, he was Artistic Director of the Banff Centre, Canada, for ten years, and is presently Artistic Director of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival and the Swansea Festival, both in Wales. He also teaches at the annual Musicfest Aberystwyth.
