Al-Hamidiyah Souk

Al-Hamidiyah Souk

Al-Hamidiyah Souk ( _ar. سوق الحميدية) is the largest and the central souk in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Introduction

A souk is the commercial market in an Arab city, although many, such as Al-Hamidiyah Souk, fulfill several additional functions rather besides trade. The souk has hamams, financial centers, and mosques.

Al-Hamidiyah Souk is located in Old Damascus, next to the Damascus Citadel.

The souk was also one of the treasures featured in "Around the World in 80 Treasures" presented by Dan Cruickshank.
