They had rented the property specifically for their needs, as it provided garage workshop with a 3-room ground floor apartment for the newly married Dave and Lucile Packard, with a sleeping shed for Bill.HP's first product, built in the garage, was an audio oscillator [http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/histnfacts/garage/brief.pdf] .
