Donald Sayenga

Donald A. Sayenga of Tucson, AZ, is a researcher, historian, and author. For many years, he was an executive for Bethlehem Steel's wire rope division and now serves as a business consultant with offices in Tucson, AZ. His writings include "Ellet and Roebling". He continues to speak on history and wire rope history, serving as Historian of the Wire Association International [http://www.wirenet.org] , Guilford, CT. Most recently he took part in the 200th Anniversary of the birth of John A. Roebling in Mühlhausen, Germany. He will present at the John A. Roebling Symposium, October 27-­29, 2006, at Polytechnic University in New York City.

In 2000, he received the Mordica Medal, the highest award of the WAI, for his efforts to document the history of the wire industry. In 2004, he was named as the first Life Member of the Associated Wire Rope Fabricators [http://www.awrf.org] , the international trade alliance for the lifting, rigging, and load securement industry, which he managed for 16 years. He has served as Chairman of the Domestic Wire Rope & Specialty Cable Manufacturers and as President of the International Organization for the Study of Wire Rope Endurance [http://www.oipeec.org] , which named him an Honorary Member in 2006.

Sayenga has also been actively involved in wrestling for four decades. He was selected by the Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for the second Order of Merit. Sayenga wrote a historical column, "The Oldest Sport," which has appeared in "Amateur Wrestling News" since 1964. He was a member of the Lafayette College team and the Tulsa YMCA team. He has been honored by the Helms Hall of Fame and the Lafayette College Hall of Fame, as well as the Dellinger Wrestling Writer of the Year award. He has also written for the International Society of Olympic Historians.
