Bishop Hedley High School is a
Roman Catholic secondary school , established in1967 , and located inPenydarren ,Merthyr Tydfil , SouthWales . The vast majority of the pupils of the school stem from theHeads of the Valleys , serving parishes fromAberdare ,Hirwaun , Merthyr Tydfil,Merthyr Vale ,Gurnos ,Dowlais ,Tredegar ,Rhymney andEbbw Vale . At present, the school serves around 690 - 700 pupils, aged 11-18. The school motto Duw a Digon means God is enough in theWelsh language .Perhaps its most famous alumnus is
Robert Sidoli , the current Welsh rugby union lock.Establishment
Bishop Hedley Roman Catholic High School was established in 1967 due to the growing need to cater for the large populous of Catholic Youth aged 11-18 in the Merthyr Tydfil and Head's of the Valleys area. The school was so named after Bishop Hedley who opened the first Roman Catholic Church in the Merthyr Valley (St. Illtyd's) in 1863. The school was expanded to a second phase in 1973. Uniform Issue
On September 5th 2008, Headteacher Maureen Harris placed over 100 pupils in isolation for not have a blazer. The new uniform was chosen by the pupil, parents and govenors which included a massive consultation plan. This firm punishment seemed to work as the number of pupils who didn't have blazers the next day have dropped around 80-90%. More information can be found on:
