The Government Engineering College, Idukki was established in the year 2000.The College started functioning at Painavu in the Government buildings renovated for the purpose.Twenty Five acres of land at Kuyilimala near Painavu was transferred to the College for the construction of permanent campus in August 2000.The first batch of Students were admitted to the College in November 2000.
Owing to the delay in obtaining AICTE approval and as per the orders of the Honorable High Court of Kerala, three batches of Students admitted to the College were transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology,
Kottayam (Govt.Engg.College,Pampady)in their final year.The AICTE team inspected the College in April 2003 and subsequently approval was granted for the 2003 - 04 admissions onwards. Campus
The scenic 25 acre campus is located at Kuyilimala,
Painavu – the headquarters of the Idukki district [http://idukki.nic.in/] . A two-hour road journey from Thodupuzha or Kothamangalam will get you to Painavu (co-ordinates: 9°50'52"N 76°56'32"E). The campus is situated nearby the state highway 33 from Thodupuzha to Kattapana. Painavu is 120 km from Cochin and 130 km from Kottayam and is well connected viabuses to all parts of the State.The cool and picturesque environs of the Idukki wildlife sanctuary located in close proximity to the campus are ideal for the pursuit of higher education. taff Advisory system
The college has a well-organized staff advisory system. Immediately after admission to the college, each student is assigned to a staff advisor, who would open a file for the academic and personal details of the student. The staff advisor guides the student in his/her curricular and extra curricular activities during the period of study in the college. Parents are encouraged to periodically contact the staff advisor either in person or by phone to evaluate the progress of their wards.
Campus Discipline
The GEC, Idukki provides the best education possible to enable the students get the most from all aspects of life at the College. In this context, it is essential that the students behave responsibly both within and outside the campus. The College strives to maintain strict discipline in the campus. Any act of ragging will be sternly dealt as per provisions of the Kerala Prohibition of ragging Act, 1998. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones in the campus. While on campus, students are required to carry their college identity cards and comply with the dress code given below:Boys: Grey Pants, cream Shirt and suitable covered footwearGirls: Grey Pants, cream Shirt with Grey overcoat and suitable covered footwear
=Facilities & Infrastructure=The academic infrastructure at Government Engineering College,Idukki is among the best in the new generation Engineering Colleges established in the state of Kerala since 2001.Adequate laboratory and workshop facilities are available for all the branches.
College Library
The college Library is in a process of expansion, currently it has around 12000 books in over 2500 titles. The Library subscribes to 20 National and 12 International journals, 5 Newspapers and some of the important periodicals. Library operations are computerized using SOUL software. The Library is open from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on all working days.

Digital Library in Engineering

Central Computing Facility
The Central Computing Facility (CCF) has been setup to supplement the departmental software labs and for efficient sharing of computing resources within the College. CCF presently has networked PCs, printers and scanners for student use. Internet connectivity is provided via 2 Mbit/s.broad band line.
Career Guidance & Placement Cell
The College has a very active Career Guidance & Placement Cell (CGPC); it has established contacts with leading software and industrial houses for campus recruitment drives. The CGPC periodically organizes soft skill development programmes and workshops to motivate students to perform better. Our students have secured placements in reputed firms.
Women’s cell
The women’s cell in the college was established in the year 2006. The cell in close co-ordination with the Idukki district women’s council arranges counseling sessions, which can be utilized by both gents and lady students.
Technical Associations
The department wise technical associations provide students the venue to fine-tune their technical and managerial skills. Activities of the associations include industrial visits, technical talks, and participation in technical events in other institutions. A chapter of the energy conservation society is functioning in the college. Efforts are on to set up an IEEE Student chapter and a HAM Radio club in the college.
Edusat Interactive Terminal
The Satellite Interactive Terminal established in the college by ISRO enables distant education via the
Edusat . The virtual classroom environment is made alive by the latest multimedia equipment. Sessions on various engineering topics are held on the network and students are able to interact in real-time with the subject expects.Parent Teacher’s Association
The Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) provides a common forum for interaction among Parents and Teachers. The executive committee chaired by the Principal coordinates the activities of the PTA. All it’s efforts are oriented towards improving various facilities in the college so as to promote academic excellence.

The co-operative society store caters to the needs of the students and employees of this college; essential stationery, textbooks etc are made available in the store.
Hostel facilities
The College has three main Hostels - The Men’s Hostel, Ladies Hostel and a Staff Hostel. These Hostels have separate establishments and are headed by the Warden assisted by the Resident Tutors.The Seat availability at the various College Hostel's are as follows
