Western Slavonia

Western Slavonia is a geographical region of Croatia called Slavonia. Western Slavonia is notable for its light forests, wide plains and significant agricultural industry. It is defined in its borders by the rivers Drava and Sava.

Cities

Major cities in the area are: Požega, Virovitica, Daruvar, Kutina, Novska and Nova Gradiška.

History

After Croatian independence in 1991, southern parts of the area were held by army of the Republic of Serbian Krajina from 1991 to 1995 and were known as SAO Western Slavonia. Croatian forces took control of this region in 1995 in Operation Flash. The area suffered heavily during war and today has one of the worst unemployment rates in Croatia and struggling industry.
