species =Lachlan "Lachie" Fraser was a fictional character in the Australian
soap opera "Home and Away ". Portrayed byRichard Grieve , he was a regular from 1997 to 1998, making his final appearance in the 1998 finale, some months after leaving the regular cast. He later died off screen.Character history
A doctor at the Northern District Hospital, Lachie was first seen while
Pippa Ross was in a coma, offering consolation to her foster daughter,Shannon Reed , who was indirectly responsible for her condition. Lachlan obviously didn't have any scruples about dating those he met through work because he then invited Shannon to the hospital ball. He was pressed into service not long after when a storm blacked outSummer Bay and caused a ship wreck off the coast, treading on the toes ofKelly Watson , who he was in the process of replacing. Not long after taking the job full time, Lachie moved into Summer Bay, sharing a house with
Travis Nash andJesse McGregor . He also became good friends withSelina Roberts , who was working at the hospital as a student nurse. Lachie continued seeing Shannon and felt comfortable enough with her to take her to see his dysfunctional family, most of whom were also doctors (at this point the family included two younger siblings, Edward and Elizabeth, who seemed to be forgotten about very quickly). However, Shannon didn't seem entirely comfortable with him, especially the physical side of their relationship, and Lachie received a possible explanation for this with the arrival of Shannon's old friend, and possible love interest, Mandy Thomas. Although Lachie proposed to her, Shannon instead chose to leave forParis with Mandy.Shannon's departure - and the fact that a nurse he had befriended was killed in a car accident around the same time - hit Lachie hard and on the rebound he slept with
Chloe Richards . Both of them agreed not to carry the relationship any further but he was still a great support to her when she was menaced by her one-time rapist, Brad Cooper, and an associate of his, Karen. During the incident, Lachie came into contact for the first time with local policewoman Terri Garner and the pair started seeing each other. When it was discovered that Chloe was pregnant, Lachie, like a lot of people in Summer Bay, assumed Jesse was the father (unbeknown to the fact that Jesse and Chloe had never slept together) and took a surprisingly long time to realise he was also a candidate. When Chloe confirmed that was the case, it upset Terri, especially since she had previously told her he wasn't, and resulted in her and Lachie breaking up. Lachie then had to break the news to his mother Diana, who wasn't particularly pleased to learn he was having a child with a schoolgirl that he wasn't actually dating.
As they began spending time together, Lachie did end up developing feelings for Chloe but when he broached the subject she told him she didn't feel the same way. In fact, she was being blackmailed by Diane, who had learned that she had a drug problem in the past and threatened to reveal it if she didn't stay away from Lachie. Having realised what was going on,
Irene Roberts recorded Diane explaining the deal and then played the tape to Lachie, who angrily ordered Diane out of their lives.Lachie and Chloe finally formalised their relationship, but she wasn't too happy about the idea of joining him in the shared house. Fortunately, around that time Travis and his new wife Rebecca were asked by Pippa to look after the caravan park, resulting in Lachie and Chloe taking over their old flat. While attending birthing classes, the couple met Jason Dunn, the unpopular manager of Summer Bay's Bonza Burgers franchise, and his wife Tamara. Soon after, they discovered Jason was having an affair with an oblivious Terri and eventually let Tamara know, leading to her leaving Jason.
After going into labour while the pair were taking a walk, Chloe managed to make it back to their flat in order to give birth to their daughter Olivia. However, only a few weeks later Lachie was diagnosed with a
brain tumour . He had surgery to remove it which appeared to be successful but afterwards suffered acerebral haemorrhage that left him in a coma. Although he recovered consciousness a few days later, the experience had left him brain damaged, unable to move or communicate properly. He became severely depressed in the aftermath and his condition was not helped by Diane re-entering his life and disagreeing with Chloe over treatment. He ended up accepting Chloe's offer for her to look after him at home but on his first day back he fell over on top of her, leaving both of them trapped. Not wanting their relationship to degenerate further, he accepted Diane's offer to leave for the States for treatment.Although Lachie's rehabilitation saw his movement and speech improve, the damage to his brain caused a personality change and he soon lost all interest in reuniting with Chloe and Olivia. When Chloe made the trip to the States to see him, she was horrified to find him in the arms of another woman, whom he later married. Some months later, his friends in
Summer Bay received the news that he had died from a second haemorrhage.
