It was the last and most successful of his ten UK hits, and was somewhat of a comeback hit in the US. Following the backlash against many disco artists on the charts in the early 1980s, the song peaked all the way up to #18 in the US in January 1984.

In recent years, the song has been turned into a football chant in England, adapting the lyrics to either hail a player (We've got Tommy Spurr, Tommy Spurr, We've got Tommy Spurr) or give an indication to their fate (either "....staying up" or "....going up").

The song was covered by Captain Jack in 2003 on their album Party Warriors and was also covered by Quebecois singer Jacynthe

Aunt Valerie produced the hit in the UK, and in 1994 it was remixed by Danish dance group Cut 'N' Move and it went to number one on the Australian ARIA Chart.
