Düsseldorf-Volmerswerth

Volmerswerth is a borough in western Düsseldorf, District 3, by the river Rhine. It borders the boroughs Hamm, Bilk and Flehe. Its area is 2.17 km².

While more and more houses are constructed, the remaining agricultural land is the reason for many of the people coming to Volmerswerth for walking, inline-skating and bicycling along the Rhine on the weekends.

History

The island Volmerswerth was mentioned for the first time in 1173. At that time the owner of the little fishing settlement was the monastery Schwarzrheindorf.

Volmerswerth got its own church in the year 1300. In 1456 it got its own justice court, but in 1487 it became a part of Düsseldorf. In 1856 the neo-gothic church was constructed.
