Pope Theodosius I of Alexandria (died 567) was the Coptic Pope from 535 until his death and, until 536, also recognized as Patriarch of Alexandria by the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was a Miaphysite.
As successor to Timothy III (IV), he was at first recognized by the Emperor Justinian I and the Eastern Orthodox Church. However, in 536, the Eastern Orthodox Church of Alexandria disbanded with this recognition and elected Patriarch Paul in his place. This was the final split between the Coptic and Melchite lineage. This split endures.
Pope Theodosius was exiled by the orders of Emperor Vespasian because he did not agree with him on the resolutions of the Council of Chalcedon [ [http://www.copticchurch.org/Baounah.htm Copticchurch.org] ] . Pope Theodosius spent the last 28 years of his life imprisoned in Constantinople and after his death the Egyptians elected Peter IV as his successor [ [http://popekirillos.net/ar/fathersdictionary/read.php?id=552 Fathers of Coptic Church in Arabic] ]
Theodosius is commemorated in the Coptic "Synaxarion" on the 28th day of Ba'unah, the day of his death.
