James L. Nederlander of the famous Nederlander family of
Detroit, Michigan , is also known (somewhat incorrectly) as James Nederlander, Jr., and is a veteran on Broadway as atheatre owner, operator, producer and presenter. He is thepresident of theNederlander Organization and the son of James M. Nederlander (chairman).He has a wide range of credits; as a theatre owner since 1970 and as a producer since 1984. [ [http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?ID=22466 Internet Broadway database] ] James Nederlander is a minority owner of theNew York Yankees .In 1981, along with manager Sherman Sneed, the Nederlander organization booked Lena Horne for a 4 week engagement at the newly named Nederlander Theatre on 41st street in New York (formerly The National) The showed was an instant success, and was extended to a full year run, garnering Horne a special Tony award, and two Grammy awards for the Cast recording of her show 'Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music. The show toured the U.S. and the world for the next 3 1/2 years. First stop was the Golden Gate Theatre in San Franciso in September of 1982 for a two month run. San Francisco holds a special place in Horne's career, it was there, while performing at the Venetian Room in the Fairmont Hotel, that black and white audiences were integrated for the first time in the 1950s. During her run at the Golden Gate, Lena helped to raise millions for the restoration of San Francisco's Cable Car system.
Mr. Nederlander serves on the board of the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation in New York City.
