D. C. Somervell

D. C. Somervell: David Churchill Somervell (1885, Liverpool – 17 January 1965) was a teacher at Tonbridge School in England. He was a prolific historical author, best known for his abridgement (still in print) of Arnold J. Toynbee's A Study of History

Life

David Churchill Somervell was the son of Robert Somervell, history master and Bursar at Harrow School.^[1] He was educated at Harrow School and Magdalen College, Oxford.^[2] Becoming a schoolmaster himself, he taught at Repton for nine years before becoming history master at Tonbridge School in 1919.^[1]

He also wrote a very useful book titled A short History of our Religion, published in 1922. In 1929 he published English Thought in the Nineteenth Century, an engagingly written introduction to that period, in which many an obscure name is given credible context.

He also wrote Disraeli and Gladstone, a "duo-biographical sketch" of Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, published in 1925.
