province of Milan ; from 2009 it will be included in theprovince of Monza e Brianza .
The city lies at an altitude ranging from 230 and 300 m above sea level, on theLambro river.In 2001 there were about 16.000 inhabitants there.Monuments
There are some important buildings, such as the "Villa Cusani Confalonieri", originally built as a castle and that became municipal property when the family died out. Now you can find there a park and the public library.
The imposing church of "Sant' Ambrogio e Simpliciano", built in 19th cntury, is situated in the centre of the town, near the statue of Sant'Anatalone, which has been restored recently.
The most important monument is the Basilica of San Pietro and San Paolo in
Agliate , a village near Carate; the chucrh isa a masterpiece of the Romanesque style.History
The history of carate brianza dates back to the
Stone Age , as shown by a discovery made of carved rocks that are now preserved in theArcheological Museum of Milan .The Lombardic Queen Theodolinda built in this town a topwer which became later the tower bell for the main church. After the 10th century, a wall was built around the town to protect it from barbarian attacks. The
Middle Age was characterized by the spreading of theChristianity , so five churches were built and also a hospital.During the 19th century a famous jurist and philosopher,
Gian Domenico Romagnosi , lived in Carate.See also
