History

An unpaved road along the same right-of-way was used since white settlers began traveling west to Nocona in the late 19th Century. Nocona became the economic hub of northern Montague County by the turn of the 20th Century, and improved roads were needed to move goods (particularly cotton) to the railroad from the numerous farms in Northeastern Montague County. In 1956 (thus the name), the highway was paved and generally followed the right-of-way of the previous surface.

Termini

FM 1956 terminates at FM 103 in Nocona and at FM 677 at Capps Corner, Texas, a north-south farm to market road connecting Saint Jo, Texas with Illinois Bend, Texas.
