John Hardy is an English-born composer who has been commissioned by the
Arts Council /National Lottery , theBBC ,Welsh National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales, among others.Based for most of his working life in
Wales , and honoured to be regarded as a Welsh composer by many Welsh people, he won aBAFTA Cymru award in 1994 for the multi-award-winning, and Oscar-nominated film "Hedd Wyn ", about a Welsh poet, Elis Ifans, who was conscripted into the British army during the First World War, and killed during his first hour in action atYpres , just a few days before posthumously winning the ceremonial Chair for best long poem at the 1917 National Eisteddfod (cultural Festival). The film, directed by Paul Turner, was shot on super16mm film , and only later blown up to make a 35mm print. The director took out a personal bank loan to be able to record a small orchestra playing the elegiac and romantic musical score.May 2008: John is putting the finishing touches to the musical score for the independent UK film 'Abraham's Point', written and directed by Wyndham Price, starring Mackenzie Crook who is best known as the one-eyed pirate in the Pirates Of the Caribbean trilogy. Abraham's Point's music covers many bases - it is by turns scary, sad, funny, and deeply, tear-jerkingly emotional.Please go and see the film when it is released in the later part of 2008. You will not be disappointed.
The orchestral part of the score was recorded in Prague on 1st May 2008 by the City Of Prague Philharmonic, conducted by Richard Hain.
John won his third BAFTA Cymru award for best original music recently, at the annual awards at the Wales Millennium Centre.This time the award was shared with Rob Love, the leader of Alabama 3, who collaborated with John on the music for the Welsh TV drama series 'Y Pris'.
