Foreign born Americans

Foreign born Americans

The term foreign born Americans refers to those persons who reside in the United States but were born outside the United States. While these persons may be citizens they are nonetheless foreign born. Foreign born Americans may be of any race, except native American. They may include European American, Asian Americans, African American, or Hispanics. Overall Hispanics had the largest proportion of persons born outside the United States. In 2003, more than 50% of Hispanics were "Foreign born Americans" and Hispanics also constituted the majority of foreign born Americans. The foreign born population is polarized in terms of socio-economic distribution. While the percentage of foreign born Americans lacking a high school education is higher than that of native born Americans, the percentage of foreign born Americans with college degrees is also higher than that of the native born population.
