Petar Stoychev ( _bg. Петър Стойчев) (born
24 October 1976 inMomchilgrad ) is a Bulgarian open water swimmer and is most famous for claiming third place at2005 FINA World Championships inMontréal ,Canada during the 10k and 25k metre events, respectively. Stoychev has swum at many locations around the world and was the overall winner of the Open Water World Championship eight times. OnAugust 25 ,2007 he became the fastest person to swim across theEnglish Channel in a time of 6 h and 57 mins [Doverlife - Channel Swimming Records [http://www.doverlife.co.uk/channelswimming/records.php] ] , beating the previous record set byChristof Wandratsch in 2005 of 7 h and 03 mins. He was also selected as the flag bearer for the Bulgarian Olympic team at the 2008 Beijing Games, where he swam both in the open water event (10 km marathon) and the 1500m freestyle. He ranked 6th overall in the open water event, but did not reach the finals in 1500m freestyle ; he was ranked 30th after the preliminary heats."English Channel Swims"
