6 December 1969 , Oklahoma City) is an American concert cellist.Biography
A fourth-generation cellist, Robert deMaine was born into a musical family of French and Polish ancestry. His
cello teachers have included his mother, Ann, and sister, Mary, and cellists Jane Smith, Kari Padgett Caldwell,Leonard Rose , Steven Doane, Luis Garcia-Renart, Alan Harris, Richard Kapuscinski, Stephen Kates,Paul Katz , andAldo Parisot .deMaine made his orchestral début at age 12 with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra (now the
Oklahoma City Philharmonic ), playingTchaikovsky 'sVariations on a Rococo Theme , Op. 33.Education
Mr. deMaine is a fellowship alumnus of
Yale University and theEastman School of Music , and has also studied at theMeadowmount School of Music ,Marlboro Music School and Festival , and theJuilliard School .Competitions
Robert deMaine was named the winner of the 1990 Irving M. Klein International Competition for Strings in San Francisco.
Current activities
In addition to his activities as a concerto soloist, solo recitalist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher, Robert deMaine is Principal Cellist of the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra , a post he has held since 2002.Compositions
deMaine has written music for the cello which he regularly performs, including 2 concerti, an unaccompanied sonata, 12 Études-Caprices, and several song cycles for voice and piano.
