- The Yarra Pub Cricket Association
Taken from our Articles of Incorporation, the following is basically the reason we exist as an Association.
Objectives (Statement of Purposes)
(1) To provide the opportunity for members of our community to engage in a social sporting activity. (2) To encourage participation in both our competition and our social activities by as wide a segment of our community as possible, irrespective of sex, age, politics, race, religion or cricketing ability.
(3) To foster a competition that recognizes participation as more important than results.
(4) To play a modified game of cricket designed to promote a friendly, safe and sociable environment, whilst maintaining a respect for the laws and spirit of the game of cricket.
For over 10 years now, The Yarra Pub Cricket Association (YPCA) has provided the opportunity for local folk to participate in a social sporting activity in a friendly environment. The emphasis in our matches is on participation and enjoyment, rather than results. Due to this, our competition suits many people who would otherwise not have the chance to be involved in any sport in their community.
This season we have thirteen sides participating over the summer. They will play a total of over fifty matches. All matches are held on Sunday afternoons at ovals in Fitzroy, Clifton Hill, Alphington and Fairfield. We have over 220 registered players and many more regular supporters, umpires, scorers and - most important of all - BBQ cooks.
Our expenses have recently become something of a burden. Insurance, ground hire and licences will cost our Association in the order of about $6000- this season. It seems like not that long ago that we were able to cover all of this for less than five hundred dollars.
Since 2001 we have held an annual Knock-Out Competition – Community Carnival Day in March named
The Big Day Not Out . This event has been well supported and has become a popular fixture on the Fitzroy social calendar. This year’s event will be our sixth. This event is organised and staffed by dozens and dozens of volunteers from the local community. From last year’s event we were able to donate $2000- to the Fitzroy branch of Rotary. With the blessing of the weather gods, we hope to raise even more for them this year.External reference
