journal devoted to exploring the many aspects ofmaterial s,science andengineering published monthly byThe Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) (a member-based professional society). "JOM" reports scholarly work that explores thestate-of-the-art processing, fabrication, design , andapplication ofmetals ,ceramic s,plastic s, composites, and othermaterial s. In pursuing this goal, "JOM" strives to balance the interests of thelaboratory and themarketplace by reportingacademic , industrial, andgovernment -sponsored work from around the world. The editorial scope includes archival-quality technical papers, general overviews, economic outlooks, developments in
engineering education , articles on professional concerns, archaeotechnology papers, research and business updates, meeting s announcements, interview s,opinion piece s, conference andliterature review s,software coverage, and news about TMS. Many articles can be viewed online by unregistered users.Example Reading
The cover of the July 2005 issue shows a fine layer of
electrospun nanofibers ofpolyethylene oxide spun onto a clearmask . Thefabric was developed by theU.S. Army Natick Soldier Center. The image, on display at theCooper-Hewitt Museum of Design inWashington, D.C. , as part of an "Extreme Textiles"exhibit , was selected to represent the influence ofnanotechnology intextiles , according to the exhibitcurator .What Does the Name "JOM" Mean?
From 1949 through 1988, the journal was named "Journal of Metals". With
material s systems becoming commonplace and with the journal frequently covering composites, plastic s, and othermaterial s, a name change was clearly in order. Thus, a decision was made to institutionalize the shorthand version ("JOM") instead of totally confusing the technical community by adopting a new name such as "Journal of Materials, Journal of Engineered Materials," or some such variation on a rather limited theme.References
